Great Bend sees flu outbreak

But if we follow the advice of CDC and the state health dept and our own local health department, we'll get through this."Across the district Lincoln Elementary has seen the most students missing with flu-like symptoms. Friday, fewer than a dozen students were absent and this week an average of 45 percent of the students was gone each day.And some parents have encountered problems getting the drug that treats H1N1.“My daughter called me at work and said that my granddaughter Tierra had the H1N1," said Terri Schneider, Great Bend resident. “And she was on the way to the pharmacy to get the Tamiflu. Well, she gets there, finds out they don't have it." The good news is that most people who get the flu are okay without anti-viral medications like Tamiflu. Symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter products and should go away within three to five days.

Two litres of fuel goes a long way

In a little under two school terms a group of Yass High students designed and built a fuel efficient car capable of running for 100km on just two litres of petrol.

Under the guidance of teacher Bill Donohue, the group built the car in time to enter it in the 2009 Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) competition.

Last Wednesday the students and Mr Donohue competed in the event at the Queanbeyan Race Track against nine other schools from across the region. Their vehicle was adjudged second best overall and was voted most innovative, best designed and most fuel efficient.

They were ecstatic.

The students received backing from a number of local groups and organisations.

The Greens party liked the project so much they donated money for the purchase of a safety harness.

Schleappi leads East Canton Pac-Men to runner up finish at Van

Running in the Van Wert County meet, the East Canton cross country team finished in 2nd place beside Minster by the score of 64-90. Minster is the eleventh rated division III team in the State. The Hornets managed to beat Stryker and New Bremen-- both rated number 12 in this week's poll. The Hornet Harriers were rated at thirteenth. Sixteen teams and 181 runners ran in the race.

Leading the way was Sophomore Josh Schleappi capturing the individual title with a time of 16:25. Schleappi was patient from the start-- not taking the lead until the two mile mark. Shortly after taking the lead, he found himself in second place as Darrell Randall from Fayette started to pull away. However, in the last 200 meters Schleappi turned on his kick and pulled away to win by four seconds. Schleappi's time of 16:25 now stands as the second fastest time ever run by an East Canton sophomore.

YMCA opens new building in city

On the second floor is a gymnasium, exercise rooms, a youth room and a mezzanine that looks down onto the pool. On the third floor is a running track that is elevated and circles the gymnasium, as well as a youth room and an outdoor patio.

A highlight of the new property is a stained-glass window originally purchased by local educator and former Mayor J.P. McCaskey for the Y when it built a new building at Orange and Queen streets in 1901. In storage since 1965, the window was restored and now hangs in the lobby of the new building.

The Y is not done growing, Kenderdine said.

It will examine the recreational and fitness needs in Mount Joy and see how it can meet them.

"There's not a definitive timetable because the development of a project like that will go as fast as community leaders are willing and able to take it," he said.
