Individuals Lose Free Will With The Weight of Cultural Taboos

It's not the mascot or the painted fans in the stands, but a running boy.

Yes, a boy running is completely normal, but what really makes this interesting is that boy doesn't play soccer, and most importantly, he seems to be lacking any clothing. The crowd erupts in laughter as the referees try to catch the spirited boy, but some people appear truly offended.

See, this is where the dilemma of taboos and morals come into play.

What do we as a society define as taboo, and is it the same as our personal morals?

To me, taboos are set by the local culture and running nude is not accepted.

Religious groups, the local communities, law enforcement and society in general all set the scale for taboo.

If it weren't for conditioning, would we think things such as homosexuality and adultery are wrong?

Would public nudity offend us if taboos were nonexistent? Or would our morals come into play because of bodily insecurities?

I consider personal morals to be based on one's experience and individual beliefs.

Elementary Civics Class: The Congressional Version

"You have four boys running against four girls. So you have a Boy Party and a Girl Party." The other politician interrupted. "So how are you dividing up the classrooms for the vote?"

The students' faces were blank, as if the politicians were speaking a different language. Which they were.

The teacher interjected. "The classrooms are divided up into -- uh -- classrooms. Each student is running to represent his or her classroom." The members of Congress burst into laughter. The congresswoman recovered to explain.

"If you don't redraw how the classrooms are organized, how will you know who is going to win?"

"It's the person who gets the most votes!" chirped a student, sure she knew the answer to that question.

"Of course it's the person who gets the most votes," the congressman shot back.

Time's "Hulu for Magazines" Idea Is So, So Doomed

Oh boy.

Here's how it'd work: There'd be a new company running a digital store for all of the publishers where people could buy and manage their magazine subscriptions that would be delivered on "any" device. Supposedly, Time Inc's gotten Conde Nast (publisher of Wired, Vanity Fair, etc.) and Hearst (Popular Mechanics, Esquire, etc.) ramped up about the idea as well, which would launch in 2010.

Great, except that it's not going to work. As Peter Kafka points out, they have to convince people to sign up for another service—not an easy feat if they're already tangled up with a Kindle or Apple. Especially if this new service will be just magazines, and not include newspapers. And there's no way Amazon or Apple will let the publishers tie a separate service into their devices, pissing in their pool.

Fabulous Strike tough on NY dirt

Set to oppose him in the 70th running of the six-furlong Vosburgh are Kodiak Kowboy, Go Go Shoot, Munnings, and Peace Chant.

Fabulous Strike won the 2007 Vosburgh in a laugher off an 85-day layoff and would be shooting for an unprecedented third win had he not come up a head short in the slop last year.

"He lost in a photo last year when he flipped a shoe off," trainer Todd Beattie said.

Fabulous Strike ran fifth in last year's BC Sprint, recording his lowest Beyer Speed Figure in the past two years.

"I don't think he's quite as good on the synthetic, in my own personal opinion," Beattie said. "I just think he never really got on track there. He didn't have the same kind of speed. I would be willing to run against [Zensational], I just would prefer it to be on dirt.

The Star-Ledger scouting report: NY Jets vs. Tennessee Titans

Fisher, therefore, has known Rex Ryan since he was a boy, and the typically gracious Titans coach expressed his delight that the younger Ryan got a chance to follow in his father's footsteps as an NFL head coach. On the offensive side of the ball, the Titans attack revolves around running back Chris Johnson, as Dave Hutchinson described so well earlier this week. Johnson torched the Titans last weekend for 197 yards rushing and 87 receiving yards. Johnson became the first player in NFL history to find the end zone on rushes of 90- and 50-plus yards and a reception of 60 plus yards in the same game. For that effort, his shoes landed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.As he does so many times, Bart Scott will have the last word here. Once again, the Jets have not been shy about talking through the media to the week's opponent.

'Moo'-ving right along: Cow Harbor Day and 10K Run

The Great Cow Harbor 10K Run and Cow Harbor Day take place on September 26 and 27, respectively.

The Great Cow Harbor 10K Run
The 10K Run, known for its circuitous and hilly course, is sponsored by Capital One Bank and sanctioned by the Road Runners Club of America. As many as 5,200 runners can participate, said Richard Boziwick, a longtime member of the Racing Committee whose directors include Bill Fleming, Harvey Sussman, Ron Matuza, Fritzi Gros-Daillon, William Fodor and outside consultant Jerry Wood. Volunteers from the Northport Running Club, Northport American Legion Post 694, the Boy Scouts and the Visiting Nurse Service will play a key role. The racing committee is grateful for their support, Boziwick said.

The race kicks off at 8:30 am at the William Brosnan Administration Building on Laurel Avenue, crisscrosses some of the village's most charming streets and finishes up on Main Street.
