| Athletics: Competitor Group Announces Multi-Year Deal with Brooks
The agreement brings together two of the industry's most well-respected and recognized names in the event management and specialty running space, beginning with the inaugural Rock'n' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon and Half Marathon in New Orleans on February 28, 2010. "We are excited to be partnering with a growing, dynamic company like the Competitor Group and its flagship Rock'n' Roll Marathon Series," said Jim Weber, President and CEO of Brooks. "To be able to join in on the party that is Rock'n' Roll and to expose so many avid, inspiring runners to the Brooks brand by supporting their ambitions to run longer, farther and faster is invaluable to us." The Rock'n' Roll Marathon Series revolutionized the running industry in 1998 with the launch of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego, which combined entertainment and running in an unprecedented way.
Benoit Samuelson racing in Toronto nearly two decades after win here
Both Ruegger and Whitlock are also running the half-marathon. Samuelson's weekend includes several speaking engagements, and her message is and has always been: the importance of lifelong fitness and the accessibility of running. "Running is very accessible, running and walking and jogging, it's all about keeping healthy and keeping exercise regular," she said. "Most people can run from their home or their workplace, there's really no excuse. . . "It's also important to set goals throughout your lifetime. With every finish line I've found a new opportunity or a new reason to set a new goal for myself, so that's what keeps me going along with my passion. In order to have success in running, you really need to be passionate about what it is you're doing and have patience and perseverance and persistence.

10k run and diet changes see landlady shed pounds
"We concentrated on running and building my leg muscles," said Fay. "Leonie and I did a 10k run a few weeks before the race just so I knew I could do it. On the flat it took me an hour and 31 minutes. On the day, with all the hills, it was an hour and 26 minutes. " I set a target of an hour and 45 minutes to include the hills so I did better than expected. It was a big relief and an achievement." Fay has signed up for another challenge — the Great West Run half marathon in May next year. She is now training with Leonie once a week, concentrating on her core fitness using a medicine ball, step and weights as well as some sprinting. She runs with friends once a week and uses a resistance band, which is similar to using weights, at home. Fay is also sticking to the healthy eating regime suggested by Leonie.
See Dustin run, and run, and run, and run
Some are timed events, in which competitors run as far as they can in, say, 24 hours. Birdsong has three ultrarunning events under his belt from last year: a 40- miler, a 50K (31 miles) and a 100K (62 miles). All were in preparation for the Heartland Spirit of the Prairie 100-mile race Oct. 10 in the Flint Hills town of Cassoday, in northern Butler County. Birdsong also competed this year in the Pikes Peak Ascent, a 13.1-mile race up Pikes Peak in Colorado. He reached the top of the 14,110-foot mountain in 3 hours, 48 minutes. "That was my personal best," he said. He's run the ascent before, as well as the Pikes Peak Marathon, which is held the day after the half-marathon ascent. In 2007, he did both: the ascent one day; the marathon the next.
Creighton Cross Country at Notre Dame Invite
Cup men's 10k and the Omaha Half Marathon in consecutive weekends. What was your impression of the running community in Omaha during both weekends? How has the running community supported your teams so far this season? Davis: They reminded me what I missed about Omaha in the past. It was great being a part of the running community in Oregon. It was a completely different world, with some of the biggest names and faces in the sport. As exciting and exhilarating as that was, though, sometimes it made you wonder if people took some of this stuff a little too seriously…a little too "life and death" at times. Don't get me wrong, this stuff is important, but at the end of the day, there are more important things out there. The Omaha running community can keep things in better perspective at times, and the people involved are a little more down to earth.
500 youths expected at Friday's one-miler
This weekend is truly a celebration of running in the area. After the Elementary One-Mile come the two largest running events in Fort Wayne each year: Fort 4 Fitness and New Haven Classic. Fort 4 Fitness consists of a half-marathon and a 4-mile run totaling more than 5,000 runners and walkers. The New Haven Classic is a middle school and high school cross country invitational with more than 2,100 runners competing in eight races. "I think it is phenomenal that there will be so many people running and walking in such a short span of time," Bird said of the three events. "It really says a lot about our community as runners, coaches, volunteers, fans, parents." It all starts with Bird and the little guys at his cross country event. Yes, the races are on grass and spikes are allowed.
