Swinney: I believe in what we are doing

Their quarterback running hurt us. We gave up touchdowns in the red zone and then we missed a big, big field goal. We had a lead going into the fourth quarter and you have to win the fourth quarter. Again, I really like the mentally of our team. Now we have to teach them how to win." Swinney was asked if he thought the Tigers had a fragile mentality at this point, and he bristled at the suggestion.

"This is a different football team, he said. We would have gotten blown out in Atlanta last year and we would have gotten pushed around a lot yesterday. We're a young bunch that's getting better, and thats the bottom line. You look around college football and they're up and down. They win one and then they get blown out. You see our team and weve got two close losses and there's no value in that, but I do see us getting better.

Racers flock to second Whistler Spirit Run

More than 150 runners bounded through the courses set for Saturdays cross-country races, which were geared toward organized running groups such as clubs and teams from elementary and high schools and universities, as well as masters athletes.

The biggest single team that came to the Spirit Run hailed from Victorias Oak Bay High School, a public school that sent 39 kids to run in the Olympic Park, Whistler Spirit Run board member Peter Diemer said.

Diemer said every event showed an increase in entries, as organizers this year stepped up efforts to spread the word about the running festival through media such as newspapers and radio, and social media tools like Facebook and Twitter accounts. Participation by corridor athletes also rose, Diemer added.

Its been an amazing weekend.

Golden Knights, Bears have eye on remaining undefeated

Both teams have more than one running back and hope for the rushing game and ball control to help them win tonight.

"We've been running the ball effectively the last few weeks," Golden Knights head coach Shawn Demeritt said.

He said it starts with the offensive line up front.

"We're starting to play with a physical presence," Demeritt said, adding it shows with the statistics and victories.

Dakota Cryer and Dylan Fowler are the two main running backs for the Golden Knights.

"We're a multiple wing [offense]," Bears head coach Jay Landry said.

Devante Bourque, Trevor Derouen and Nick Simon will all be running the ball for Gueydan.

"We distribute the ball pretty even amongst our backs," Landry said.

No. 17 Houston survives scare by Tech

Harrison Jeffers pushed Tech's lead to 21-10 with a 13-yard run less than a minute before halftime. It was Tech's third rushing TD of the half after scoring three on the ground in the previous three games combined.

Mannisto hit a career-long 50-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter to make it 21-13 at halftime.

The Red Raiders relied on the run on a 69-yard drive capped by an 11-yard run by Baron Batch to take a 14-10 lead in the second quarter. Batch finished with 114 yards rushing.

Keenum put the Cougars up early with a 6-yard touchdown pass to James Cleveland in the first quarter. It was his school-record 19th straight game with a touchdown throw, surpassing Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware.

A 6-yard run by Batch evened it up at 7-all later in the first quarter.

Betting on the Steelers to Repeat?

Because unlike college football where the odds makers could discount the chances of some teams against favored teams because of a lack of information, every odds maker in the world is going to make the Steelers around 17 ½ point favorite over the Detroit Lions.

So, yes, I do believe that the Steelers will cover more games than they don’t this year, but I’m not ready to sign off on them covering in every game. I say that they end up with a 9 and 7 record or a 10 and 6 record against the spread this year. Tread carefully when it comes to Steelers, is my advice. Tread carefully.

Does that prediction make me a guy who makes expert NFL picks? I have no idea, but it does make a me a guy who’s thinking outside of the box and that, my friends, can lead to profits.

Army wives take an interest in Equinox Marathon

FAIRBANKS — About a year ago, Nikki Pruett was looking to get out of the house and exercise more while her husband was deployed to Iraq.

But after running the third leg of the Equinox Marathon with one of seven “Blackhawk Babes" teams on Saturday, she was ready to take on the whole course.

“I'm a little tired and my legs are really sore, but I feel good," she said. “On the ride home, I was thinking I probably could have done the whole thing."

The Blackhawk Babes are 21 women with Army husbands who just returned or who are on their way back from Iraq with the 5-1 CAV Blackhawks, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry stationed at Fort Wainwright. A 22nd woman ran the full marathon.

The idea for the women to train together for the marathon came from Mary Kasales, who ran the course in its entirety last year.
