500 youths expected at Friday's one-miler

This weekend is truly a celebration of running in the area.

After the Elementary One-Mile come the two largest running events in Fort Wayne each year: Fort 4 Fitness and New Haven Classic. Fort 4 Fitness consists of a half-marathon and a 4-mile run totaling more than 5,000 runners and walkers. The New Haven Classic is a middle school and high school cross country invitational with more than 2,100 runners competing in eight races.

"I think it is phenomenal that there will be so many people running and walking in such a short span of time," Bird said of the three events. "It really says a lot about our community as runners, coaches, volunteers, fans, parents."

It all starts with Bird and the little guys at his cross country event. Yes, the races are on grass and spikes are allowed.

Time's "Hulu for Magazines" Idea Is So, So Doomed

Oh boy.

Here's how it'd work: There'd be a new company running a digital store for all of the publishers where people could buy and manage their magazine subscriptions that would be delivered on "any" device. Supposedly, Time Inc's gotten Conde Nast (publisher of Wired, Vanity Fair, etc.) and Hearst (Popular Mechanics, Esquire, etc.) ramped up about the idea as well, which would launch in 2010.

Great, except that it's not going to work. As Peter Kafka points out, they have to convince people to sign up for another service—not an easy feat if they're already tangled up with a Kindle or Apple. Especially if this new service will be just magazines, and not include newspapers. And there's no way Amazon or Apple will let the publishers tie a separate service into their devices, pissing in their pool.

Editorial: Lunch break knife attack is new low

The knife attack on a 17-year-old boy during his school lunch break is a chilling indication of how common this type of assault has become in recent times.

Stabbings are now running at a rate of five a day and 14 people have already died this year from these injuries.

The use of knives originally seemed to be confined to rows between violent criminals but blade crime has now become so commonplace that fifth year students are apparently using knives to settle their disputes.

Unlike guns, anyone can get hold of a knife so it would be difficult to impose a widespread ban on blades.

We desperately need, however, to alter the current culture of young men wielding knives as a badge of their masculinity.

We have to find out what motivates this type of crime and also impose the stiffest of penalties to discourage ordinary people and school children from resorting to this violence.
