500 youths expected at Friday's one-miler

This weekend is truly a celebration of running in the area.

After the Elementary One-Mile come the two largest running events in Fort Wayne each year: Fort 4 Fitness and New Haven Classic. Fort 4 Fitness consists of a half-marathon and a 4-mile run totaling more than 5,000 runners and walkers. The New Haven Classic is a middle school and high school cross country invitational with more than 2,100 runners competing in eight races.

"I think it is phenomenal that there will be so many people running and walking in such a short span of time," Bird said of the three events. "It really says a lot about our community as runners, coaches, volunteers, fans, parents."

It all starts with Bird and the little guys at his cross country event. Yes, the races are on grass and spikes are allowed.

The couple started running for fitness and then their son encouraged them to participate in running events. Since then, they have averaged some 50 events a year. Dick was in retail business for many years and after retirement, drove a school bus and is still driving. Barbara has been a homemaker. The couple has a son and a daughter and two grandchildren.They received the Fred Baxter Award (honoring a long-time Longview Event participant) in 2006.Not many participants since Harvest Classic began under guidance of Jim Stephens and Judy Bain have taken part for 22 years.Since 1998, 2,863 runners/walkers have taken part and a total of $44,510 has been raised for the HELP Warehouse, local food bank. Get fit, shed pounds and love life at the Highland Boot Camp

Running from October 5-9, participants will spend an intensive week working on breaking bad eating habits, freeing themselves from cravings and working on extensive cardio exercises. Using techniques including neuro linguistic programming (NLP), attendees will focus on how to change their behaviour while learning how to stay on track permanently and shed those unwanted pounds.

Upon arrival, a typical day will consist of a morning mind and fitness workshop, a cardio workout, life coaching session and exercise ball workout. After breaking for a nutritional lunch, boot campers have a session of NLP and some motivational games before finishing the activities for the day to return to the calm and quiet of the hotel.

Iain Miller, general manager at Hilton Coylumbridge, said: "With a huge range of activities on offer and such incredible natural beauty on our doorstep, the Cairngorms is the perfect setting for our guests to take the time out to recharge their batteries as well as lose those extra pounds."

The camp is run by personal trainer Tracy Griffen and life coach Eilidh Macdonald-Harte.

Whether you hit the trails biking, hiking or running, just getting out is a big first step.

■ Stay loose. Stretching is key. Mark Jones, an exercise physiologist for Optimum Fitness, said he guides clients through extensive motion-based stretching routines designed to loosen their muscles and tendons and expand flexibility. You can get a head start on that process by going through an extensive but static stretching routine at home every night in your bedroom. He said doing the work at night makes for better long-term results.

■ Bring those poles. Birgitta Lindgren, director of the Steamboat Nordic Center, said the easiest thing aspiring cross-country skiers can do to prepare for the coming season is hike with their poles. “No. 1, it helps keep balance for anyone that has a problem with that," she said.

Sessions involve climbing, running, pulling up and body weight exercise. �Basically, it�s a lot of acting crazy,� says Steve Smuts, founder of Abu Dhabi Parkour.


Health benefits: As well as offering increased muscle tone and weight loss, the intensive cardio workout acts as the opposite to self-defence �by enabling you to get away from people who cannot do what you do�, says Smuts.

"I have never met either of them again. But New York will provide us the chance to meet again," he said.

New York City Marathon organizers have also announced a total guaranteed prize purse of 800,000 dollars, with a new champion's bonus of 70,000 dollars.

So any past champion who wins this year race will collect a first place prize of (200,000 dollars).
