Another Mumbai shelter under scanner

The boys alleged that they were stripped naked after being told they were being trained for a marathon. Manish Shahane reportedly got drunk, woke up the boys in the dead of night and repeatedly beat them up.

The two teenagers today filed a police complaint after no action was taken against their Manish Shahane, who is reported to have humiliated and abused them for months on end.

A report in the Mumbai Mirror states that at the 27-year-old ashram, which shelters more than 65 boys, some inmates are orphans, while others have been dumped by their poor families. The six who spoke to us are orphans, in the age group of 15 to 20 years.

Their complaints range from being forced to eat unhygienic food and getting beaten up for silly reasons to forced crime.

WFP to shut Somalia food centres

The World Food Programme (WFP) is closing 12 feeding centres for mothers and children in Somalia.

The WFP says it has simply run out of money and now has to make cuts.

The decision has been made despite the ongoing crisis in Somalia, and the WFP says the reductions are now hitting people across east Africa.

Despite the depth of the need, the WFP says the international community has failed to rally round with the funding it requires.

Severe drought

The decision to close the feeding centres in Somalia was particularly difficult for the World Food Programme.

But Peter Smerdon, a WFP spokesman in Nairobi, Kenya, says the organisation had little option.

It had only received 40% of the funding needed for the year ahead.

MacQuitty leads boys' cross country with sixth place finish at

For most of the boys, this was their first time running in a varsity race, nevertheless, and there were many good performances for the younger runners.

Sophomore Corso Rosati finished first for Paly and 133rd overall in 18:49, followed by sophomore Nikolai Solgaard (150th overall at 19:02) and sophomore Thad Claassen (184th overall at 19:42).

Although many Paly runners ran well, the 98-degree heat affected both of Paly's races. In the Division 2 varsity race, junior John Brunett and sophomore Charlie Kelsey both had to stop because of the heat.

Although Kelsey managed to finish the race, he had to pull over in the middle to throw up.

"I had an omelet about two hours before," Kelsey said.
