| Army wives take an interest in Equinox Marathon
FAIRBANKS — About a year ago, Nikki Pruett was looking to get out of the house and exercise more while her husband was deployed to Iraq. But after running the third leg of the Equinox Marathon with one of seven “Blackhawk Babes" teams on Saturday, she was ready to take on the whole course. “I'm a little tired and my legs are really sore, but I feel good," she said. “On the ride home, I was thinking I probably could have done the whole thing." The Blackhawk Babes are 21 women with Army husbands who just returned or who are on their way back from Iraq with the 5-1 CAV Blackhawks, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry stationed at Fort Wainwright. A 22nd woman ran the full marathon. The idea for the women to train together for the marathon came from Mary Kasales, who ran the course in its entirety last year.

Budget concerns take over first TUSD candidate debate
The budget was the number one topic at the first debate held for candidates running for open seats on the Turlock Unified School Board of Trustees. Five out of the six candidates running for the open seats on the TUSD Board sat patiently waiting for their next question from the community. Out of the questions they were asked, about half of those were concerning budget cuts and where the cuts were going to be made. The League of Women Voters and Walnut Elementary School PTA hosted the Thursday evening debate to give the community a chance to voice their concerns. About 40 people attended the debate and only 10 questions were sent up to the speaker to ask the candidates. The debate started with a two-minute opening statement from each candidate. Incumbents Felica Renshaw, who was unable to attend the debate due to an out-of-state trip planned a year in advance, Timm LaVelle and Tami Muniz all emphasized their experience working on the board of trustees, while the challengers, Lori Crivelli, Josh Bernard and Bob Weaver all expressed their desire to bring a new perspective to the board.
Widow Gill gets insomnia help
However, just as she was running out of ideas to help with her problem she decided to take the advice of a guest speaker at her Women's Institute group. What she found was help close to home and from someone who could relate to her troubles. Gill booked a series of treatments with Jayne Sheen, stone therapist and founder of Droitwich-based business Stone Me, who combines organic oil massage treatments with resting hot and cold healing stones on a patient's body. “When I heard Jayne talk at the WI meeting, I didn't think her treatments were for me. But seeing 4am come round for most nights since 2003, I asked if she could help my insomnia," said Gill. “I must admit that my first treatment of six seemed a little strange – like nothing I had ever experienced before.
The Wednesday Comment
The decathlon and heptathlon work for track and field because they test a range of very different skills (sprinting, middle-distance running, jumping and throwing) and produce a genuinely world-class all-rounder. But this Jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none event surely has no place on the velodrome. The proposed changes will favour the host nation, though. Victoria Pendleton will have a chance to equal Sir Chris Hoy's triple gold medal haul, with the addition of the team sprint and Keirin for women. And Great Britain will be favourites for the women's team pursuit too.Meanwhile, the UCI's annual brewery tour ended in confusion when president Pat McQuaid ordered lemonades all round.By the way, the omnium features an indvidual pursuit, a flying 200-metre time trial, a points race, a scratch race and a kilometre time trial (500m for women).PYRENEES BITE BACKIf the strong rumours of a mountain time trial on the Col du Tourmalet, and a vicious stage from Luchon to the Col d'Aubisque, prove to be true, the 2010 Tour de France will be tailor-made for Alberto Contador. The only snag for Contador is that he is currently stuck in an Astana team that is sinking with him on board.
