Quality depth at linebacker proving its worth for Mitchell

It's been that way forever and doesn't look to be changing anytime soon.

When looking at Mitchell High's 3-0 start on the gridiron, it's easy to point to strong-running speedster Ricky Trinidad's nearly 200-yards per game rushing average and two kick return touchdowns and say, "Yeah, that explains it." Or maybe it's receiver-turned-quarterback Matt Michaels' 75 percent completion percentage, three scores and no interceptions that jumps out quickly.

Not to diminish the Mustangs' offensive effectiveness - they are averaging over 26 points per game - but it's the guys on the other side of the ball who deserve equal praise for the team's best start in school history.

While holding opponents to only 11 points per game thus far, much of Mitchell's defensive prowess is predicated on the solid play from a deep group of ball hawks at the linebacker position.

Fire-hit Gordonstone Paving Products & Landscape Services in

He said that if he did not receive an offer for the business, he would sell the assets and the last firm of its type in York would close forever.

“I would like to thank our suppliers, The Press and our customers for the loyal support they have shown, and thank the employees who have worked for us over the years," he said.

“I look back with satisfaction when I see the local lads we trained doing so well for themselves after serving their time with Gordonstone. I have had a great time running a bespoke service in a great city."

The paving stone business was wrecked after an arson attack on a lawnmower repair shop next door spread to the production area, where vibrating tables and rare York stone moulds were destroyed.

Mr Gordon, who said the arsonists were never caught, brought the plant back into production – only to be hit by the downturn in the building trade.

More in Mondays with Bob Greene

“A flame I thought was extinguished forever suddenly lit up again." – Justine Henin, announcing her return to tennis one year after she retired while being ranked number one in the world.

“Justine is that rare athlete who decided to step away from the game at the height of her powers and no doubt she will be a force to be reckoned with." – Stacey Allaster, WTA Tour CEO, on Justin Henin ending her retirement.

“The match reminded me again that in tennis you really don't know how anything will turn out before you actually play." – Kimiko Date Krumm, at 38 years, 11 months, 30 days becoming the second oldest player in the Open Era to win a singles title on the WTA Tour.

“When I was on court, I didn't feel like she was 38. She won five matches in a row this week, four in three sets, more than two and a half hours, and today she was running like it was the first day." – Anabel Medina Garrigues, after losing to Kimiko Date Krumm in the final of the Hansol Korea Open.

Voters select the best in Texas

The road goes on forever and the party never ends, as a Texan of another profession sings, for the state's running backs.

Imagine having to choose the best two running backs in the history of Texas high school football.

The University Interscholastic League is giving fans an opportunity to do just that as part of its Centennial Celebration.

Fans can vote on All-Century Teams in football, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, soccer, track and field, softball and baseball by going to the UIL's Web site at www.uil.utexas.edu and clicking on the Centennial Celebration link.

Voting is open for football and volleyball and the ballots for the other sports will be released as their seasons begin.

Victoria High running back Sedrick Brown, who set school records in career rushing yards (3,330) and touchdowns (57), before playing at Purdue, and Cuero running back Robert Strait, who rushed for 8,411 yards and 120 touchdowns and made three consecutive state final appearances and won a state championship in 1987, before playing at Baylor are on the ballot.

Getting to know the real Paul Kirk

Caucuses — seemingly from the Transvestite Taxidermists against the Metric System to the Irish-Jewish Federation for the Terminally Short — were forever issuing their own non-negotiable demands upon fearful party leaders. Chairman Kirk — over the noisy threats of caucus addicts — straightforwardly abolished Democratic Party caucuses. He announced that the Democratic Party would again compete in the South by his decision that Atlanta would be the site of the party's 1988 national convention. He directed that the written party platform would no longer be an endless compilation of the wish lists of every influence-seeking faction. Heading into the 1988 general election, the party was solvent, remarkably united and running on a platform that was a relatively succinct, if deliberately vague, statement of principles.
