Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes are gearing up for
Whether you hit the trails biking, hiking or running, just getting out is a big first step. ■ Stay loose. Stretching is key. Mark Jones, an exercise physiologist for Optimum Fitness, said he guides clients through extensive motion-based stretching routines designed to loosen their muscles and tendons and expand flexibility. You can get a head start on that process by going through an extensive but static stretching routine at home every night in your bedroom. He said doing the work at night makes for better long-term results. ■ Bring those poles. Birgitta Lindgren, director of the Steamboat Nordic Center, said the easiest thing aspiring cross-country skiers can do to prepare for the coming season is hike with their poles. “No. 1, it helps keep balance for anyone that has a problem with that," she said.
Ready to take action
Thursday morning, about 15 officers were broken up into groups to practice handling four active-shooter situations. Earlier in the week, the officers received instruction on different techniques to apprehend a gunman. Thursday, officers in the third group, made their way to the second floor of Booth Central as gunshots echoed in the stairwell. As they headed toward the sound, a man came running out, his hands up as he was yelling, “Help me! Help me!” The man was guided to safety and then the officers rushed the room with guns ready. A bit of hesitation was shown, however, as they were going through the classroom doorway. “Don’t ever expect the person in front of you to go in one direction. You just go in the opposite direction of them,” Chris Garibay, ISP sergeant, said.
Upperclassmen pass on traditions to freshmen
This year's women's cross country team has just that, with five seniors leading a talented group of underclassmen. For Head Coach Bill Ware's squad, this mix is essential to produce a winning team. The Bombers, already ranked in the top 30 teams nationwide, have won all three of the invitationals they have entered so far this year. The reason for this start is not only smart, fast running, but also a combination of great leaders helping young runners be the best they can be, Ware said. “It's not just one thing. It's a mix of many things," Ware said. “It definitely helps when you have the senior leadership like we do this year." Led by captains Amanda Boccio and Bridget Hastings, the rest of the senior class — Elizabeth DeLong, Melanie McCormick and Anna Sumerlin — has aided a roster made up of mostly underclassmen and guided them to an unbelievable start.

Game of the year?
There's a long-running and entirely misguided belief that video games need to be more like movies. It's like saying hip hop music needs to be more like detective novels, or abstract art needs to be more like three-camera sitcoms. Trying to force a game to look and feel like a movie -- whether it's by hiring big-name voice talent, shoehorning "cinematic moments" into gameplay or writing hundreds of lines of character dialogue -- often results in a cliched, muddled mess. But there's an exception to every rule, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is it. In stores Oct. 13 (we've got the exclusive first Canadian review), this PlayStation 3 action-adventure title is one of the most unapologetically movie-like video games ever made. And it also happens to be a front-runner for the best video game of 2009.
