Running: On every day leading up to the 2007 Danish elections, Anders Fogh Rasmussen invited different sectors of his electorate out for a jog. The Nato secretary-general, and former prime minister of Denmark, also enjoys kayaking and cycling. He has completed parts of the Tour de France's gruelling mountain stages. Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has deliberately developed his image as a sporty young president by inviting television crews to film him on his morning runs. But his collapse while jogging, in July, provoked some negative press. Philosopher Alain Finkielkraut called for Sarkozy to abandon his “undignified" pursuit.

Martial arts: Is there no end to Vladimir Putin's sporting talents? The former judo champion of St Petersburg also stars in his own DVD, titled Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin.

Benoit Samuelson racing in Toronto nearly two decades after win here

Both Ruegger and Whitlock are also running the half-marathon.

Samuelson's weekend includes several speaking engagements, and her message is and has always been: the importance of lifelong fitness and the accessibility of running.

"Running is very accessible, running and walking and jogging, it's all about keeping healthy and keeping exercise regular," she said. "Most people can run from their home or their workplace, there's really no excuse. . .

"It's also important to set goals throughout your lifetime. With every finish line I've found a new opportunity or a new reason to set a new goal for myself, so that's what keeps me going along with my passion. In order to have success in running, you really need to be passionate about what it is you're doing and have patience and perseverance and persistence.

Barefoot running: "Liberate your feet"

So, if you've ever been interested in barefoot running, then let me know because I'm looking to start a barefoot running club. I know it sounds crazy at first, but if you haven't tried it, then I suggest you liberate your feet and give it a chance.

I'm the only one who answered Engwall's ad. But I didn't want to run with him (my tootsies are too delicate for that). I wanted to hear about how he got into barefoot running.

It's building up something of a cult following in some circles. Barefoot runners swear that it's their fancy running shoes, with their arch support and thick cushioning and more, that are the root of jogging injuries. And a movement has sprung up in recent years of people who hit the asphalt, the sidewalk, the grass for long runs -- and leave their high-tech Nikes at home.

Mum in third Race for Life says helping beat cancer is so rewarding

A UNIVERSITY lecturer who lost her grandmother to lung cancer said she had signed up for a 10k run to "help fight a horrible disease".

Jill Hanson will be running in her third race for Cancer Research UK when she takes part in the run at Kedleston Hall later this month.

The mum-of-one entered her first fund-raiser, a 5k Race for Life in Aberdeen, as a way of losing weight after giving birth to her 18-month old son, Alexander Pumford.

But the 33-year-old also said her family and her life had often been touched by cancer, including the death of her grandmother, Irene, 78, nine years ago.

And, in 2003, her mother's stepmum, Janet Burns, died in her 70s of breast cancer.
