Walking Round the Clock to Stop Cancer

"As I'm running I'm thinking of her and all she did for me when I was little," says William Menser.

Last year, Menser lost his grandma to cancer. Each lap he makes is in her name.

"I'm running for her," says Menser.

Jessica Morgan is walking in honor of her mom who died from cancer 7 years ago.

"It was really really hard," says Morgan.

Morgan says being at the Relay For Life makes things easier.

"You're not alone, there is so much support," says Morgan.

More than 1500 people are taking part in the 24 hour event at La Quinta High School. They are raising awareness and money for the battle against cancer. Team members take turns going around the track, round the clock. They walk, run, wheel, ride or skip.

Vacation notion turns into running passion

An Internet search connected him to the Rockford Road Runners club. Simmons began running with various buddy groups, and eventually, with the Tuesday night Road Crew running program at the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

Simmons said his first race, a 5-kilometer run at Davis in the fall of 2007, taught him a lesson about overconfidence and running his own pace when he failed to finish ahead of an obviously older runner.

"I was thinking, 'OK, I can't keep up with this guy but I can keep going,' " he said. "I was thinking don't stop and don't walk. I finished the race, but I was dying and I was hooked.

"I started running just because it felt good and to get in shape. I enjoyed the competitiveness and setting goals. It was a hobby and I'd never had many hobbies what with work, our kids growing up and being involved in church, but I got to know a lot of the runners and there are just so many people with such a great attitude."

Simmons quickly built his running stamina and speed.

Running for Terry

In the years since Fox ran 5,374 kilometres from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, to Thunder Bay, Ontario, numerous Canadians have put on their running shoes and helped to complete the cross-country he couldn't in his memory.

This is especially true of students, like the 72 students at Hazelridge School who participated in a Terry Fox Run on Sept. 24. They were just a few of the many students who participated in similar runs throughout the Sunrise School Division and beyond this year.

"Students had a great time running for the cause," said Principal Lana Gardner. "Getting together for this cause was a great feeling."

"My heart was beating so fast, but it felt good!" one student said, while a parent added, "It was nice to come and take part in the run with my daughter."

Students began their Terry Fox Run with a warm-up that included stretching and a reminder from Gardner about the importance of safety.
