Oldmar's Leslie Stallings, 47, wins Tahoe Triple, three marathons

Stallings, the wellness director for the North Pinellas branch of the YMCA of the Suncoast in Palm Harbor, began running in 1996. She started with 5-kilometer runs, graduated to the 10K and by 1999 had worked her way up to the marathon distance of 26.2 miles.

Over the years, she ran marathons in Chicago, New York and Boston, and competed in more than 100 triathlons, including two Ironman-distance events (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run).

Stallings doesn't look like your typical runner with long, lean limbs. "I'm 5 feet tall and weigh 98 pounds," she said. "My legs are short, so I have to have a quicker turnover. But because I am so light, there is less impact, so it all balances out."

Uphill battle

The Tahoe Triple, three marathons around the lake that separates Nevada from California, typically draws about 100 competitors.

Pine Ridge teacher trains for marathon by running with students

On Saturdays, the groups have meets against other schools.

"It's really rewarding to see your hard work pay off," said eighth-grader Julia Hancock. "It's what drives us."

For Langenmayr, the team's hard work is what drivers her in her own training. She will run the New York City Marathon, her third, on Nov. 1.

"I am up to 16 miles now, but I have 35 days left. I hope to get one, maybe two, 20 mile runs in before then," she said. "My goal is to do it under five hours. If I could do it under five hours, that would be great."

But Langenmayr is not only thinking about her time, she is also thinking about helping others. She is running the marathon as part of a charity fund-raising team called Team for Kids. The organization raises funds to fight childhood obesity with a focus on diabetes.

Jefferson High drops baseball due to funding shortfall

"She's a senior in her first year of running cross country,'' said Peter Gilmore, a top American marathon runner who is helping out with the coaching at Hillsdale following the death of coach Randy Hurst. "She had always done club soccer in the past. She ran a 5:04 mile in track without running in the fall. Now that she's doing that, we'll see where it goes. She's quite an athlete.''

Hillsdale's Mitchell Lee ran 13:00 to take second in his race and share, with Menlo-Atherton's Joe Ocon, the top time turned in by a San Mateo County boys runner.

"Mitchell is a great kid who has really bought in to the whole ethos that if you work hard, build up mileage and show up every day, you're going to get better,'' Gilmore said. "Now we're really starting to see results. He's got a good head on his shoulders and loves to race.''

At the Stanford Invitational, Aragon's Lauren Croshaw had the best showing of any San Mateo County girls runner with a time of 19:13 over 5,000 meters, the 42nd-best time overall out of 1,007 runners.

500 youths expected at Friday's one-miler

This weekend is truly a celebration of running in the area.

The New Haven Classic is a middle school and high school cross country invitational with more than 2,100 runners competing in eight races.

"I think it is phenomenal that there will be so many people running and walking in such a short span of time," Bird said of the three events. "It really says a lot about our community as runners, coaches, volunteers, fans, parents."

It all starts with Bird and the little guys at his cross country event. Yes, the races are on grass and spikes are allowed.

Schleappi leads East Canton Pac-Men to runner up finish at Van

Running in the Van Wert County meet, the East Canton cross country team finished in 2nd place beside Minster by the score of 64-90. Minster is the eleventh rated division III team in the State. The Hornets managed to beat Stryker and New Bremen-- both rated number 12 in this week's poll. The Hornet Harriers were rated at thirteenth. Sixteen teams and 181 runners ran in the race.

Leading the way was Sophomore Josh Schleappi capturing the individual title with a time of 16:25. Schleappi was patient from the start-- not taking the lead until the two mile mark. Shortly after taking the lead, he found himself in second place as Darrell Randall from Fayette started to pull away. However, in the last 200 meters Schleappi turned on his kick and pulled away to win by four seconds. Schleappi's time of 16:25 now stands as the second fastest time ever run by an East Canton sophomore.
