Holly Invitational (Division II) - Boys Cross Country

It was the first time Dickie had beaten Hord in cross country, though he won some races against the Linden All-Stater in track."My freshman year, when he was a sophomore, he was way ahead of me," Dickie said. "I was like, ‘Man, this guy's just a stud. This guy's unbelievable. He's going to be breaking records and winning the state meet.'"My sophomore year I improved a lot, more than I expected. I'm like, ‘OK, I'm behind him, let's see what I can do.' I'd race him all the time in cross, but he'd beat me. My sophomore year in track, I started beating him. He's a great runner. It's fun racing him."Dickie was in a four-man pack with Hord, Vicksburg's Mark Beams and Pontiac Notre Dame's Christopher Burns until about halfway through the race. Dickie took the lead near the two-mile mark, but had to push hard to hold off Hord.Dickie was one of three Flint-area runners to win individual championships in the 10 varsity races.Durand senior David Madrigal and Goodrich senior Taylor Pogue weren't pushed nearly as hard, running alone up front to win their Division II races.Madrigal cruised to victory in 15:52, 24 seconds ahead of Chesaning junior Trevor Denton.

PRINCETON: Changes abound in fall season

Both did plenty of running in their former sports and their transition has been mostly dealing with how to race over the 5-kilometer high school distance. Sean Pradhan is new to the Princeton High School boys cross country team, but not new to racing. Being a track competitor for the past three years has helped him make a transition not just to cross country, but to the top of the Little Tigers lineup. For Pradhan, it was the decision to change sports that was hardest. He made the highly competitive PHS boys soccer team and played with them for two weeks before leaving to join cross country. Alex Passano went the other way. A former standout in cross country, she moved to the field hockey team at Hun this year as a senior. She contributed immediately with the Raiders’ first goal of the season.

'Shift' kicks 'Need for Speed' series into high gear

Electronic Arts' long-running "Need for Speed" franchise has been stuck in a rut lately. While that's not altogether unusual for a series that has been around for more than a decade, EA decided to jumpstart the brand and turned the reins over to new developer Slightly Mad Studios.

The end result, "Need for Speed: Shift," kicks the series back into high gear with addictive game play, gorgeous graphics and a deep career mode that should keep gamers gripping their steering wheels for quite some time.

"Need for Speed: Shift" is a fairly stark departure from previous games in the series. Gone are the trademark police chases and arcade racing that helped define the franchise. Instead, Slightly Mad Studios took a more realistic approach to "Shift" and put the emphasis squarely on driving.

It seems to us . . .

Awwww.

We're just hoping the Sabres can still burn the Maple Leafs, without running afoul of the DEC.

FALLING HOPES: A reader wants to know why The Buffalo News isn't on the cutting edge of reporting, with frequent update stories, on the progress of an obscure bill for a statewide referendum to divide New York into two separate states.

Well, largely because there is no progress. And don't hold your breath.

But we will devote some ink to speculating on boundaries. How'bout an Upstate New York that includes the Yankees, and a Downstate New York that gets the Mets?

After what the Mets did to their Buffalo Bisons farm team this year, it would serve downstate right.

LIBERTY LOST: So the closest living relative of Emma Lazarus, she of the "Give me your tired, your poor" poem gracing the Statue of Liberty, lives in Derby.

The Bratz Designer Counterpunches Mattel

Larian says he'll soon be running ads in magazines such as Parenting with the tagline "Your daughter's best friend shouldn't cost a fortune."

Much about doll marketing is different since the Bratz line hit the scene in 2001. The lobby of MGA's Van Nuys (Calif.), headquarters is decorated with photos of celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Jessica Alba posing at fancy parties with Bratz dolls. These days celeb-filled soirées are out. Instead, Larian is spending a significant amount of his marketing budget online at sites such as Stardoll.com, a Web site where girls design virtual dolls. "It's a changing world," he says.

Retailers seem to be embracing the new lines. Toys 'R' Us has featured both Moxie and Best Friends in its circulars. On Oct. 3 the chain held in-store events where girls could win Moxie prizes.
