Spotlight Iowa City: Running and writing

Matt McCue, 26, recently penned the book An Honorable Run, from which he will read from as part of the “Live from Prairie Lights" series, at Prairie Lights Books, 15 S. Dubuque St., at 7 p.m. today.

An Honorable Run is a coming-of-age story and an homage to the two track coaches who left an indelible mark on McCue's running career. His high-school coach, Bob Brown, was the first to impress him in his time on the track team at Regina High School.

“I was a pretty good freshman runner," McCue said. “His plan involved more patience, while I wanted quick results. Ultimately, it was up to me to decide."

As a young man, McCue had the kind of respect for Brown that allowed him to take his advice. For him, the coach's job wasn't only putting a good program together, he was also a mentor when it came to mentally preparing for practice or a meet.

THE HIGHER LIFETIME COSTS OF BEING A GAY COUPLE

Our gay family is made up of two women living in New York State in a committed partnership that lasts 46 years, until the first partner dies at age 81. We ran two sets of calculations: in the one that turned out to be our worst case financially, one woman earned $110,000 and the other $30,000. In our second couple, both partners earned $70,000. We started running the numbers when both were age 35.

We received assistance from Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, who performed our tax analysis, which required simulating more than 900 income tax returns, in part because we followed the partners for 50 years. We also decided to run all scenarios across the three states so that the results would not be skewed by different state taxes. We've outlined all the detail in a workbook linked to the online version of this column.

Why should bookies be made to share their profit with sports

If sport wants to get into betting, it can apply for a licence like anyone else, and pay the costs inherent in running the business: hundreds of millions on technology, risk management, infrastructure, and brand. Or, sport by sport or team by team, it can sign commercial deals. Betfair are Manchester United's official betting partner; and the sponsor of the King George at Ascot, among other things. Both deals run to seven figures.

SROC's second basis of claim for money is the principle of "polluter pays": they claim that betting companies create an integrity problem which sports have to deal with. Bluntly, this is nothing more than a Trojan horse to riches, recommended by lobbyists who can't stand up the argument about intellectual property.

Inherent in sport's clear-cut results is the ability to profit in some manner, which leads the unscrupulous to try anything – as was already apparent through years of scandal unconnected to, and pre-dating, the internet betting industry.

700 runners take part in Pink Ribbon Run

The run, which benefits breast cancer awareness education at Shannon, offered participants the option of a 1-mile, 5K or 10K race.

"There are very few 10K races in San Angelo," said Lyndy Stone, Shannon's director of marketing. "We added the 10K this year, and over 100 people participated."

In total, about 700 people overall participated in the Run.

"We have had such a great response from the community," Stone said. "There is such a diverse group running. Everybody is coming out to support the cause."

Stone was especially thankful for a local running organization, the Road Lizards, who coordinated the timing and results for the race.

"They made this possible," she said.

Stone said she was excited about the number of participants this year. Last year, the first year of the race, about 200 to 250 runners were expected.
